Driver Accused of Hitting Firefighter Is Arrested
A driver accused of hitting a firefighter at a closed road on Sept. 13 was arrested Oct. 6. Also: five weeks of arrests and tickets.
A driver accused of speeding through town on Sept. 13 and hitting a firefighter at a road the fire department had closed was arrested on a warrant Oct. 6, East Hampton police said.
The driver, Kendal Shelton, faces nine charges, among them assault on public safety personnel causing injury, reckless driving and evading responsibility with injury, the state charge for driving away after someone is hurt. He could not post a $30,000 bond and was taken to Middlesex court.
Police said Shelton entered East Hampton from Portland, speeding and passing cars in no-passing zones, then disregarded a closure the fire department had set up for an unrelated crash, hitting one firefighter and narrowly missing several others. Police did not say how badly the firefighter was hurt.
Police said the investigating officer identified Shelton using tools including other departments' license plate readers, cameras that log the plates of passing cars, and records searches. On Oct. 13, the Town Council tabled the department's updated policy on the cameras, and a discussion of whether the town should use them, until it gets more information.
