Apple Maps May Already List Your Shop. How to Claim It

Your shop can be on Apple Maps before you ever sign up. Claim it on Apple Business so Apple’s email reaches you when it changes your name or hours.

Look up a shop in Middle Haddam or Cobalt on Apple Maps, the map app on iPhones, and you may see a card with its name, hours, phone number and photos. Apple calls it a place card. Your business can be on Apple Maps without your ever signing up. You take charge of it through Apple Business, which Apple announced as free.

If a customer finds your shop closed when Apple Maps had it open, they can tell Apple from the card. Apple reviews the report and can change the card on its own. When it changes a business’s name, hours or open status, it emails the business. That email goes to the people with the right roles on the business’s Apple Business account. You need that account to get it.

Getting it in your name

Go to business.apple.com and choose Sign up now. You then have 60 days to verify the business, meaning you show Apple proof that it’s yours, using two methods from Apple’s list. If Apple hasn’t approved it in that time, it deletes the account and its data. Apple’s check can take up to five business days, and longer when Apple is busy.

  • Your Employer Identification Number (EIN), the federal tax ID, or a D-U-N-S number, Dun & Bradstreet’s nine-digit company number. Apple counts either one as a single method.
  • A record added to the settings behind your web address, which shows you control it.
  • One official document: a business license, sales tax permit, food, health or alcohol permit, lease or property agreement, utility bill or other document.
  • App Store Connect, if the business has an app with Apple.

No website and no app means the ID number and a document.

Next, choose Brands > Locations and add your shop, which Apple calls a location. When yours is already on Maps, Apple may offer to confirm it by calling the number it has on record and giving you a four-digit code. A message reading “This location is already managed” means another account has it. Add it anyway, then request a transfer with proof such as a business license or utility bill. Apple can take up to five business days on a transfer.

What Apple will take

Your name on Apple Maps is the one on your sign or website, and only that. Apple’s rule: “For your display name, there should be no details other than the name.” No descriptions, no ®, © or ™, and no village or town unless it is part of what the business is called. Apple reviews every photo, which can take up to three business days. Apple’s rules bar collages, photos with added text or QR codes, and “any AI-generated content,” and its photo guidelines rule out stock photos.

When Apple’s email arrives, sign in and open the location showing Updates Available. Choose Looks Good if the change is right. If it isn’t, edit the field to something other than what Apple put there and save. For a name, attach any supporting documents and choose Send for Review. Apple can take up to five business days to decide.
