Your Shop May Be on Bing Already. Here's How to Claim It

Bing may already show a listing for your shop with your address, phone and hours. Claim it for free, and check your Google listing before you let Bing copy it.

Search for your shop on Bing, Microsoft’s search engine, or on Bing Maps, and a box may come up with your address, phone number and hours. That box is your Bing listing. Bing builds listings from many sources, so a shop in East Hampton, Middle Haddam or Cobalt may already have one, mostly filled in, even if the owner never made it.

You can take charge of it for free with Bing Places for Business, Microsoft’s tool for owners. In October 2025 Microsoft announced a rebuilt Bing Places with a new home at bing.com/forbusiness. Type www.bingplaces.com and you land there.

One warning: Bing can copy your Google listing, right or wrong. Check Google before you link the two.

Claiming it

Sign in at bing.com/forbusiness with a Microsoft account, a work account, Google or Facebook. Whatever you claim is tied to that account’s email, so pick one the business will keep. Search for your business. If it’s there, claim it. If it isn’t, choose Create a new business.

Next, Bing has to verify you, which means confirm you’re the owner. Nothing you enter goes live until then. Microsoft sends a six-digit code by phone, mail, email or text, though some options won’t be offered to every business. A postcard typically takes 5 to 6 business days in the United States, and Microsoft suggests waiting at least 12 days before you contact support. Once you’re verified, a listing typically goes live in 7 to 12 days in North America. Change it again while a change is waiting and the expected date resets, so hold off.

Copying from Google

Google calls its version of the box your Business Profile. In your Bing account, choose Import from your Google Business Profile, pick how often Bing should copy it (weekly, biweekly or monthly) and sign in to Google.

Where the two listings match, Microsoft says, “Bing will use Google data to overwrite the Bing Places for Business listing information.” After that, Bing’s dashboard doesn’t currently let you edit the linked listing. The fix goes in Google and waits for the next copy.

If Google has already verified the business, Microsoft says Bing verifies the copy automatically, and it then typically goes live in 7 to 12 days. A copied listing may still need verifying before you can fully manage it. Copying may leave you with two Bing listings for the same business, especially when Bing already had one. Some details, your category among them, may not come across exactly.

Keeping it right

Bing checks what owners send. Your name, address, phone, website, hours, category and open-or-closed status are applied only when they match outside information Bing trusts, Microsoft says. Otherwise they may not go live or may be overwritten. Microsoft’s advice is to keep those details consistent and current everywhere the business appears online.

Use the name customers know. Leave out “best,” “cheap” or “closed” unless the words are legally part of it. A social media page shouldn’t stand in as your main website. Breaking Microsoft’s listing rules could get the listing suspended. After a move or a new name, Microsoft says not to edit the old listing. Create a new one and mark the old one Closed.

The Standard: Claim your Bing listing at bing.com/forbusiness, and link Google only once your Google listing is right.
