Your Google description: 750 characters about your business
Google welcomes what you offer, what sets you apart and your history. It does not want links or a sale pitch.
The description is the part of a Google listing where the business speaks in its own words, and Google shows it in a section called “From the business.” For someone in East Hampton weighing two businesses side by side, it is where the owner gets to explain the place.
Google says the field is for useful information about the services and products you offer, and it welcomes the mission and history of the business too. The limit is 750 characters, and “No links of any type are allowed.”

Google’s suggestions for what to cover:
- What you offer
- What makes you special
- How long you’ve been in business
- Anything else that’s helpful for customers to know
Google’s own sample is an ice cream shop, and the line doing the most work in it is a plain fact: “We serve 35 flavors of homemade, hand-churned ice creams and sorbets year-round.”
Why it matters. The description rules sit in Google’s guidelines for representing a business, and a profile that breaks those guidelines “becomes disabled or suspended.” Every edit is reviewed before it goes live.
The trap. Turning the description into a sale sign. Google’s guidelines say it should not focus on promotions, prices and sales, and give two examples of copy that is not allowed: “Everything on sale, -50%” and “Best bagels in town for $5!”
Prices do have a home. Businesses in certain categories, like service businesses, may be able to open Edit services and add a price and a description to each service. A local store selling physical goods can list them through Edit products. A restaurant’s menu items and prices go in Google’s menu editor, which Google says is for food and drink businesses only and has limited availability.
Where to change it. Sign in to the Google account linked to your profile, then search Google for your business name and city or “my business” (in the Google Maps app, tap Business). Select Edit profile, rewrite the description and select Save. If you cannot get into the listing, start with No. 1 in this series.
Check yours today. Run the description through a character counter, then reread it. Any sentence that is mostly about a deal or a price should be rewritten about the business.
The Standard: Tell customers what you offer, what sets you apart and how long you have done it, in 750 characters or fewer.
